A recent issue of RSI magazine (roofing/siding/insulation)asked the question of material suppliers, "What issues do you have with some contractors?" At the top of the list is an issue some of you may or may not be surprised to hear, and it is an issue that we roofing contractors complain about often. Although the magazine was a little more harsh with their label.
The magazine came right out and said it. Greed. Not price shoppers or tire kickers. Greed.
A few of the comments from suppliers; "They look too much at prices rather than value." "Always looking to cut costs and lower the price of the job." "The biggest problem I see is that many contractors contribute to the long-term roofing failures this industry is experiencing because of their own selfish greed to want to make a little more money."
And I have to agree with the survey.
Some roofing contractors are greedy price shoppers. Either running from supplier to supplier trying to save a few dollars on a box of nails. Or using roofing nails when screws and washers are called for. Or skipping the last row of underlayment because they ran out and don't want to drive back to the supplier to purchase more.
But, that is just some contractors.
Most contractors are more interested in getting value, good service, timely deliveries and quality products, because they plan on being in business for a long time. Then they can properly service the many homeowners who are also looking for a good roofing value.

-good installation practices, and the desire to stand back at the end of the day, look over your work, and take pride in what you have accomplished--a good contractor treats his clients home,as he would his own,and looks to build work relationships with the client

that is one of the industry problems, along with contractors failing to study a product to obtain a proper understanding of it,in order to install it properly. in a price conscious market these can be things "some contractors" do to try and break even, instead of trying to do the job with the best value for the customer, they do one at the lowest cost,a good contractor knows the difference, and would rather install a job that will withstand the test of time--unfortunately,all too often we are all tarred with the same brush, and have to "prove",we believe in doing a quality job, with good materials,
