Scie Roofing is a small 1-3 man roofing contractor located in Raumati Beach, New Zealand and services the greater Wellington metropolitan area. Scie specializes in the installation of modified bitumen and PVC single ply flat roofing. Mike Gabbitas, the owner, has been involved in the roofing and waterproofing industry since 1970. The top picture is of a 3 level townhouse near Wellington that Scie Roofing installed new PVC single ply membrane on two flat decks. This next picture is Mike sanding the plywood decking (I have never seen another roofing contractor do this) to insure a smooth surface for the new roofing.

Here you can see the detailing of the PVC coated drip edging and the raised support blocks for the deck railing. Quite a few roofing contractors are content to just run the pvc membrane over the edge of the gutter and secure it with an aluminum termination bar and screws. The best way, as seen here, is to install the manufacturers pvc coated metal drip edging along the gutter and then  heat weld the pvc membrane to that edge.
For the railing posts, first the membrane was laid and secured to the roof. Then, wood blocks were cut and secured to the roof and then covered and sealed with pvc membrane. A very nice job.

The railing block covers shown in the picture above were fabricated in the shop before installation. Mike had taken a series of pictures to show how it was done, seen here, and there are more of the whole fabrication on his website.

The second house above was built in the fifties and was originally an asphalt built up roof. Scie removed the old roofing and installed a new two layer modified bitumen roof. The next two pictures show part of the installation. After the old roofing was removed there was rotted wood that needed replacing. After the new wood is in place, the first layer of modified bitumen is installed. A "night seal" secures the old roofing and new roofing joint till the next day.

When Mike began installing single ply roofing membranes, he found the available washer plates that secure the roofing membrane to the decking unacceptable. Not wanting to compromise on quality, he contacted a local die maker to fabricate the tooling and then proceeded to manufacture his own plates to his specifications.
