Serving the Evans City, Harmony, and Pittsburgh area, Slateworks Roofing specializes in slate, tile, and copper roofing. In business since 1979, in addition to slate and tile, Slateworks has added roof inspection, maintenance, and general repair services. They also work on shingle and flat roofing and install gutters and downspouts. A roofing company that is going to specialize in a high end area of roofing such as slate and copper work, certainly needs to be capable of high end workmanship.

A couple houses that are typical examples of Slateworks portfolio. On the left is a new Vermont slate roof with swept eaves, copper fascia and gutters, and copper standing seam dormer roofs. On the right is a log cabin built in 1810 with a new roof of salvaged sea green slate.

Installation of a closed valley on a slate roof. This looks good. Heavy roof underlayment as a base with an extra layer of ice and water shield in the valley. Copper valley flashing with a full layer of slate underneath. Copper nails used to secure the slate. Nicely cut and fit valley slate pieces.

Copper brick wall counter flashing. Cut in short sections and trimmed to fit the curve of the roof, this flashing was fabricated to copy the original. Not really a time saver as it takes more time to layout the lines, this style of flashing reduces the amount of vertical lines normal to pieced step flashing. Notice that the risers, the short vertical cuts, have been cut back at an angle. This helps to direct the water out and away from the joint and helps to prevent water wicking into the vertical seam. This flashing style is not the best if located on a wall that is routinely hit by wind driven rain.

Half round copper gutter corner miter. Nice fit to this mitered corner. The joint has been soldered using a gas torch, which does a nice job but tends to discolor the copper a little more than an iron. The edge slates have been mortared along the edge to match the return and overhang details. This style is not seen on many houses in the states, but certainly makes for a nice detail.

New half round copper gutter installation. Note how the downspout exits the gutter at an angle straight back to the wall without a vertical drop and initial elbow. Not a common technique but a match to the original gutter installation.
